{"id":785,"date":"2021-03-17T11:11:37","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T11:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=785"},"modified":"2021-12-21T11:11:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T11:11:58","slug":"women-must-be-the-front-center-of-covid-recovery-un-secretary-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=785","title":{"rendered":"Women Must Be the Front &#038; Center of COVID Recovery: UN Secretary-General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u0418\u0437\u0432\u043e\u0440: WUNRN \u2013 17.03.2021<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/images\/Vesti\/2021\/03.2021\/1\/Women%20Must%20Be%20the%20Front%20-%20h.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>UN Women\/ Nangyalai Tanai<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Afghan parliament members attend a meeting on women in decision-making positions<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/03\/1087502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/03\/1087502<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Women Must be \u2018Front and Center\u2019 of Pandemic Recovery, UN Chief Says<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>16 March 2021 &#8211; <\/strong><strong>Women need to be \u201cfront and centre\u201d of the pandemic recovery as a matter of economics, efficiency, effectiveness and social resilience, the UN chief told the women\u2019s commission on Tuesday.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMale-dominated teams will come up with male-dominated solutions\u201d, <a title=\"Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2021-03-16\/secretary-generals-remarks-town-hall-civil-society-during-the-65th-session-of-the-commission-the-status-of-women-delivered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> a virtual town hall with women civil society during the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CWS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot go back to the failed man-made policies that have resulted in the fragility we see around us \u2013 in healthcare systems, in social protection, in access to justice, and in the wellbeing of our planet\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A litany of setbacks <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UN chief painted a devastating picture of the social and economic impact the <a title=\"Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic has had on women\u2019s rights, particularly the most vulnerable, marginalized and poorest.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke about gender-based violence, both inside the home and online, as well as the repercussions of school closures and elder care in perpetuating inequalities, along with the inability of 12 million women to access sexual and reproductive health services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a title=\"United Nations Children\u2019s Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNICEF<\/a> reported last week that up to ten million more girls are at risk of becoming child brides as a result of the pandemic\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, there is a huge gender gap in the task forces and panels that are supposed to be building the recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turning it around <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To ensure that everyone enjoys life, dignity and security on a healthy planet, he said there was a need to \u201creset\u201d policies on the basis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief stressed that \u201cgender equality is a question of power\u201d, and as such, \u201cwomen\u2019s full representation and leadership are a prerequisite\u201d in moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a more inclusive, networked multilateralism that recognizes the strength that comes through diversity. We cannot talk about inclusive multilateralism without including half the world\u2019s population\u201d, he spelled out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seize the moment <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to \u201creignite\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/decade-of-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Decade of Action<\/a> for the <a title=\"Sustainable Development Goals\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SDGs<\/a>), and chart a path to more equal, just, inclusive, sustainable societies and economies, the Secretary-General advocated for five \u201ctransformative actions\u201d to build women\u2019s representation, participation and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, he called for repealing discriminatory laws, taking concrete steps to ensure women\u2019s equal representation; advancing economic inclusion with equal pay; addressing violence against women through increased funding, more effective policies and political will; and support for young women leaders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Signs of hope\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Crediting vaccines that \u201chave been developed in record time\u201d, Mr. Guterres said, \u201cthere are now signs of hope\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than going back to the previous \u201cnormal\u201d, often discriminatory, unjust and unsustainable, he underscored the importance of moving towards a \u201csafer, fairer, more inclusive and equal world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s insights needed <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hosting the event, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka echoed the UN chief in saying that COVID-19 \u201ccannot be solved by men alone without the insights of women\u201d and called for an \u201cagreed conclusion that highlight the agency of engaging and involving women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She introduced Tumie Komanyane of Frontline AIDS, who zeroed-in on the issue of justice, which for many women living in sub-Saharan Africa, \u201cremains a far-fetched reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Komanyane asserted that reparations for violence against women and girls be a \u201ckey part of the COVID-19 response\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough many of the countries have progressive legislation, implementation remains fraught with challenges, including poor resource allocation to response\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nandini Tanya Lallmon, a social activist leader from Mauritius who spoke on behalf Women\u2019s Rights and the LGBTI Caucus, detailed that \u201cthe near absence of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming, women, girls and people from local councils, political parties, trade unions\u2026have resulted in them facing barriers to access and exercise their rights\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Lallmon underscored that \u201cfull and inclusive participation in public life\u201d is a prerequisite for ensuring that the interests of every group are adequately represented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u0418\u0437\u0432\u043e\u0440: WUNRN \u2013 17.03.2021 UN Women\/ Nangyalai Tanai Afghan parliament members attend a meeting on women in decision-making positions https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/03\/1087502 Women Must be \u2018Front and Center\u2019 of Pandemic Recovery, UN Chief Says 16 March 2021 &#8211;
