{"id":1523,"date":"2019-10-18T09:44:07","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T09:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=1523"},"modified":"2021-12-24T09:44:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-24T09:44:26","slug":"general-assembly-elects-14-member-states-to-the-un-human-rights-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=1523","title":{"rendered":"General Assembly Elects 14 Member States to the UN Human Rights Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u0418\u0437\u0432\u043e\u0440: WUNRN &#8211; 18.10.2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>October 17, 2019 &#8211; The UN General Assembly today elected 14\u00a0States to the Human Rights Council, the United Nations body responsible for promoting and protecting all human rights around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>By secret ballot, the Assembly elected Armenia, Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Libya, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Namibia, Netherlands, Poland, Republic of Korea, Sudan and Venezuela.\u00a0 All 14\u00a0members will serve three-year terms beginning on 1\u00a0January\u00a02020.<\/p>\n<p>The newly elected States are replacing the following outgoing members: \u00a0China, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Hungary, Iceland, Iraq, Japan, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia and the United Kingdom. \u00a0In accordance with Assembly resolution\u00a060\/251, those Member States were eligible for immediate re-election except delegations which had already served two consecutive terms \u2014 China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The 14\u00a0new members were elected according to the following pattern:\u00a0 4\u00a0seats for African States; 4\u00a0seats for Asia-Pacific States; 2\u00a0seats for Eastern European States; 2\u00a0seats for Latin American and Caribbean States; and 2\u00a0seats for Western European and other States.<\/p>\n<p>Newly elected to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council were Armenia, Germany, Indonesia, Libya, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Namibia, Netherlands, Poland, Republic of Korea, Sudan and Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande (Nigeria) announced that the following States will also continue as members of the Council: \u00a0Afghanistan, Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chile, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Eritrea, Fiji, India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia, Somalia, Spain, Togo, Ukraine and Uruguay.Created by the General Assembly in March\u00a02006 as the principal United Nations entity dealing with human rights, the Human Rights Council comprises 47\u00a0elected Member States.\u00a0 On the basis of equitable geographical distribution, Council seats are allocated to the five regional groups as follows:\u00a0 African States, 13\u00a0seats; Asia-Pacific States, 13\u00a0seats; Eastern European States, 6\u00a0seats; Latin American and Caribbean States, 8\u00a0seats; and Western European and other States, 7\u00a0seats.<\/p>\n<p>In other business, the Assembly approved the Secretary-General\u2019s appointment of Fatoumata Ndiaye\u00a0(Senegal) as Under-Secretary-General for Internal Oversight Services for a five-year term beginning 25\u00a0October.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2019\/ga12204.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2019\/ga12204.doc.htm<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u0418\u0437\u0432\u043e\u0440: WUNRN &#8211; 18.10.2019 October 17, 2019 &#8211; The UN General Assembly today elected 14\u00a0States to the Human Rights Council, the United Nations body responsible for promoting and protecting all human rights around the globe.
