{"id":1441,"date":"2019-12-09T09:06:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T09:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=1441"},"modified":"2021-12-24T09:06:46","modified_gmt":"2021-12-24T09:06:46","slug":"eu-the-european-parliament-challenge-for-gender-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/?p=1441","title":{"rendered":"EU &#8211; The European Parliament Challenge for Gender Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u0418\u0437\u0432\u043e\u0440: WUNRN \u2013 09.12.2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/healthrights.mk\/images\/Vesti\/2019\/12.2019\/2\/EU%20-%20The%20European%20Parliament%20Challenge.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Brooke Cagle on Unsplash<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a title=\"Go to the page of source\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:12008E019:EN:HTML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Council, acting unanimously in accordance with a special legislative procedure and after obtaining the consent of the European Parliament, may take appropriate action to combat discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Go to the page of source\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:12008E019:EN:HTML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article 19, Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>August 5, 2019 &#8211; The EU has adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2018\/628272\/EPRS_BRI(2018)628272_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a>, issues recommendations, exchanges and good practices and provides funding to support action by member states. The concepts of EU gender equality policy were shaped by European Court of Justice rulings. The European Parliament regularly adopts own initiative reports on gender issues, calling for more efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/social\/20170203STO61042\/gender-equality-time-to-close-the-gap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve gender equality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament has always been very active on achieving equality between men and women and has a standing committee dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/committees\/en\/femm\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s rights and gender equality<\/a>. Every year, Parliament marks International Women\u2019s Day on 8 March and raises awareness by organising events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gender equality at work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the EU approved new rules on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/social\/20180706STO07413\/parents-work-life-balance-new-leave-rules-for-family-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family and care-related leave<\/a> and more adaptable working conditions, to create more incentives for fathers to take family-related leave and to increase women\u2019s employment rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>EU legislation on gender equality in the work place:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>*Rules on employment (incl. equal pay, social security, working conditions and harassment)<\/li>\n<li>*Rules on self-employment<\/li>\n<li>*Rights to maternity, paternity and parental leave<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parliament also calls for concrete measures to narrow the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/policies\/justice-and-fundamental-rights\/gender-equality\/equal-pay\/gender-pay-gap-situation-eu_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender pay gap<\/a> &#8211; the difference between what men and woman are paid for the same work &#8211; which in the EU was an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Gender_pay_gap_statistics#Gender_pay_gap_levels_vary_significantly_across_EU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16% in 2017<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/social\/20170609STO77059\/the-40-gender-pension-gap-how-parliament-wants-to-narrow-it-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pension gap<\/a> &#8211; the difference in pension income that men and women get &#8211; which stood at <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/info\/files\/aid_development_cooperation_fundamental_rights\/annual_report_ge_2019_en_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35.7% in 2017<\/a>.
