CIVICUS Monitor rates the conditions for civil society or civic space. We provide ratings for civic space in 196 countries (all UN member states and Kosovo, Palestine and Taiwan).<\/p>\n

At CIVICUS, we see civic space as the respect in policy and practice for the freedoms of assembly, association and expression which are underpinned by the state\u2019s duty to protect civil society.<\/p>\n

We view civic space as a set of universally-accepted rules, which allow people to organise, participate and communicate with each other freely and without hindrance, and in doing so, influence the political and social structures around them.<\/p>\n

CIVIC SPACE IN 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, only 3% of the world\u2019s population lives in countries with Open<\/strong> civic space. This has decreased from 4% last year.<\/p>\n

GLOBAL CIVIC SPACE RESTRICTIONS <\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the past year, civil society across the world has faced a variety legal and extra-legal restrictions. Below we document the top ten violations captured in the CIVICUS Monitor.<\/p>\n

COUNTRY RATINGS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CIVICUS Monitor currently rates 43 countries as Open<\/strong>, 42 rated as Narrowed<\/strong>, 49 rated as Obstructed<\/strong>, 38 rated as Repressed<\/strong> and 24 rated as Closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n
