Global Austerity Alert: Looming Budget Cuts in 2021-25 - Gender

NEW YORK and NAIROBI, Apr 15 2021 (IPS) - Last week Ministers of Finance met virtually at the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to discuss policies to tackle the pandemic and socio-economic recovery.

But a global study just published by the Initiative for Policy Dialogue at Columbia University, international trade unions and civil society organizations, sounds an alert of an emerging austerity shock: Most governments are imposing budget cuts, precisely at a time when their citizens and economies are in greater need of public support.

The 2021 report highlights why bodily autonomy is a universal human right that must be respected and reveals the severity in which it is undermined, violated and denied. “Our communities and countries can flourish only when every individual has the power to make decisions about their bodies and to chart their own futures,” said UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.

COVID & Pregnancy Guidelines

Are pregnant women at higher risk from COVID-19?

Pregnant women or recently pregnant women who are older, overweight, and have pre-existing medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes seem to have an increased  risk of developing severe COVID-19. When pregnant women develop severe disease, they also seem to more often require care in intensive care units than non-pregnant women of reproductive age.

Due to changes in their bodies and immune systems, we know that pregnant women can be badly affected by some respiratory infections. It is therefore important that they take precautions to protect themselves against COVID-19, and report possible symptoms (including fever, cough or difficulty in breathing) to their healthcare provider.

WHO will continue to review and update its information and advice as more evidence becomes available.

Over 700 children and young people, aged between nine and 22 years old in 27 countries, were asked how digital technology impacts their rights, and what actions they want to see taken to protect them.

Drug use among older people globally has risen in recent years and countries must act to address this “hidden epidemic”, the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) said in its annual report, issued on Thursday.

The independent expert body also highlighted the negative impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the global supply of medicines, and on the well-being of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders.

16 March 2021 - Women need to be “front and centre” of the pandemic recovery as a matter of economics, efficiency, effectiveness and social resilience, the UN chief told the women’s commission on Tuesday.

“Male-dominated teams will come up with male-dominated solutions”, Secretary-General António Guterreswarned a virtual town hall with women civil society during the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CWS).

GENEVA (3 March 2021) – A UN human rights expert today called for a robust and rapid global response to the world’s worsening water crisis, saying that climate change had become a “risk multiplier” - exacerbating pollution, scarcity and disasters.

“The world faces a water crisis and it is getting worse,” David Boyd, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, said in a report presented to the Human Rights Council.  “Human use of water, water pollution and the degradation of aquatic ecosystems continue to accelerate because of population growth, economic growth, the climate emergency, land-use change, extractivism, inefficient use of water, and weak planning, regulation and enforcement.
